1 The Tokai Earthquake and the Warning Declaration

The Tokai Earthquake is the great earthquake predicted in the future around this area, including Gifu Prefecture. When at the Tokai Earthquake is predicted, the Prime Minister will issue a Warning Declaration to call people's attention to the possible disaster.

1 The Warning Declaration is transmitted via various sources:

TV, Radio

Loud speaker trucks

Sirens

Sounding a siren for 45 seconds, stop 15 seconds and repeat

2 What happens when the Warning Declaration is issued ?
  1. Electricity and gas will be available but please minimize usage.
  2. We recommend that you rely on prestored water.
  3. Telephone usage will be restricted.
  4. Shinkansen and other trains will stop at the nearest safe station, and bus services will stop.
  5. Children will be sent home immediately or delivered to their guardian.
  6. Traffic control will increase.

2 Daily Precautions

The falling of furniture etc. caused by an earthquake can be very dangerous.

2 Saving Food and Drinking Water for an Emergency

Once a great earthquake occurs, stores and shops will be damaged and we won't be able to get items we want. Please make the necessary provisions for food and other daily necessities.

Necessary quantities of food and drinking water

Maintain a seven-day food supply, including
Emergency rations for three days.

Three liters per person per day for three days.

3 Fire Prevention

One of the most fearful factors of an earthquake is fire.

3 When the Earthquake Occurs

  1. Put your safety first!
  2. Be quick to turn off all heat sources !
  3. If fires breaks out, extinguish it quickly !
  4. Don't rush outside !
  5. Don't go near narrow lanes nor alleys, fences cliffs or riversides !
  6. Be ready to take precautions against landslides and flooding !
  7. If evacuations is necessary, go on foot. Carry as little baggage as possible !
  8. Help others, giving first-aid to the injures !
  9. Try to obtain correct information so as not to be misled by rumors !
  10. Don't panic ! Take sanitary precautions !
